AMERICAN ROUND SAND BEETLE

Omophron americanus
GROUND BEETLES (Carabidae)

This is a small oval, convex beetle around 5-8mm (1/3rd of an inch). Its color is variable but is usually brown with dark spots. It has been identified to genus but is most likely O. americanus.

 

This beetle was photographed at Neale woods. Beetles of this genus live in damp sand along rivers, lakes and streams. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known.

 

It is a nocturnal beetle. Adults take cover during the day in burrows dug in the ground. Adults are gregarious and often come to lights. This species is the most common and widespread of its genus in N. America.
