This robust fly is approximately 3/4 inch (20 mm) long with a black thorax, legs and wings. Its tarsi are orange tipped. The fourth and fifth segments of the abdomen are gold colored with a band of black bristles between each segment. There are 15 known species of Belvosia in North America, all of which are very similar in appearance.

This fly was photographed in late June at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. These flies reach their peak in numbers in July and August. They can be seen taking nectar from flowers.

Species in the genus Belvosia are parasitoids of the larvae and pupae of moths in a variety of families. Sphinx and Silk moths are among the most important host families.
