This is a dull black to brownish black beetle 6-9 mm ( ¼-1/3 inch ) long. It was identified with the help of experts at Bugguide.net.
This beetle lives under bark and bracket fungi. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known but we would expect it to be common. This one was photographed after coming to lights at Neale Woods.
Males of this species lack horns.
