This caterpillar was identified with the help of the volunteer experts at BugGuide. Its coloration is variable, but mostly shades of green. It is listed here as “slightly hairy” but it has some longer dorsal hairs. It feeds on a variety of plants and it is the most widespread hairstreak in North America. The adult – only one image is shown here – is described in more detail along with more images on the page under “Butterflies – Gossamer Wings”.

The Gray Hairstreak is our most common hairstreak. It is more abundant in Neale Woods than in Fontenelle Forest.
