This beetle is about ½ inch long. It has brownish elytra and a black head. It was identified with the help of volunteers at Bugguide.net

 

This one was photographed on Stream Trail. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known.

 

It is a member of the Harpalinae subfamily the largest subfamily in the Carabidae.
