JAPANESE UMBRELLA INKY CAP

This mushroom has a grayish brown cap with a smooth, circular, sunken center (B). It is less than a quarter of an inch to one inch in diameter. The gills are free and crowded and of a white and then purplish brown to black inky color (A). The stalk is 2-5 inches long.

This is a common mushroom in urban and suburban areas.

It is rare in Fontenelle Forest having been seen only once in the uplands.
