This perennial aquatic has prominent floating leaves, up to 6 inches long, with submerged stalks and stems (A). The brownish flowers are crowded on a cylindrical spike which emerges erect above the water surface (B). It is identified by elliptic floating leaves and an erect flower spike.

Grows in shallow water of streams, lakes and ponds, flowering in July and August. In Fontenelle Forest, uncommon in water along Stream Trail.
