This Neuroterus sp. wasp is approximately 1/16th inch (2 mm) in length. The body is entirely black. The legs are dark brown. The antennae are dark brown. The wings are brownish and semi-opaque.

This gall wasp was found at Fontenelle Forest on a Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpus). It emerged on Feb. 23, 2013. It is probably common In Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods on Bur Oaks. It is much more likely that the galls will be seen than the gall wasp.

These galls are usually referred to as spangle galls. The galls develop on the lower surfaces of oak leaves in fall. Most species have both bisexual and asexual generations and form two distinct galls. There are more than 750 species and 49 genera of Cynipid wasps in North America.
