This frog grows to about 3 inches in length. It is identified by the light spot in the center of the tympanum (C); the dark spots on its back not encircled by lighter pigment; and a break in the light line running back from its eye (A). The very similar Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens) lacks the light spot, usually has lighter pigment around its dark spots, and has an unbroken line along its side.
The abundance of this species of Leopard Frog in our two nature centers is yet unknown. The specimen in image “A” was found near a ditch along Camp Gifford Road, which has water in it much of the time. The frog in image “B” was found in the stream in Fontenelle Forest.
