ACROLOPHUS TUBEWORM MOTH

This Tubeworm moth has a wingspan of approximately 1 inch (23-30 mm). The forewing is tan with dark brown smudges and marks. The forewing fringe is slightly flared with hairlike scales. The hindwing is plain tan.

 

The frequency of occurrence in this area is not known. It was photographed on 10 June 2016 at Neale Woods coming to moth lights. Distribution in North America, according to sightings reported to BugGuide, is Texas to Kansas and Nebraska east to Ohio and Virginia, south to Florida. Adults fly in May and June.

 

The larval food is not known, but the larvae of many species in the genus Acrolophus are detritus feeders. This species is in the subfamily Burrowing Webworm Moths (Acrolophinae).
