A red and black beetle a little less than inch in size. It was identified with the help of experts at Bugguide.net
This beetle was photographed as it came to lights at the nature center. It is widespread throughout N. America but this was the first time it was photographed at Fontenelle Forest. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is unknown.
This is a species of ground beetle in the Platyninae subfamily, that prefers to live near water.
