This planthopper is about 1/2 inch long (12 mm) with white legs, large, heavily veined wings and a rather unusual snout. Wing veins are variably colored from white to red. It has unusual antennae which are twisted in appearance and are attached below the eye (see Photo A).

 

The abundance of this planthopper in this area is not known but it is considered to be common nationwide.

 

Adults of this species feed on plant juices and the nymphs feed on fungi. There are about 70 species of Derbid planthoppers in fourteen genera in North America and about 1700 species in 160 genera worldwide. There are two species in the genus Apache.
