The Apamea Cariosa moth is about .75 inch long. The forewing is gray with darker gray shading. The heart-shaped orbicular spot and reniform spot are tan colored. There are black basal and anal dashes. The subterminal line is black outlined in tan above. The hindwing is plain light brown with darker veins.

 

This moth is probably uncommon. It was photographed on 4 June 2016 at Fontenelle Forest and 10 June 2016 at Neale Woods coming to moth lights. It has been recorded in Alberta and Wyoming east to New Brunswick and Maine and south to Texas and North Carolina. Adults fly in June and July.

 

There is little information about this species. The food plants are not known. Moths in the genus Apamea are generally considered to be pest species.
