This diminutive fly is approximately 3/8 inch (10 mm) in length. The thorax is black with light colored fuzz. The elongated abdomen is black with narrow white segments. The eyes are large and green. The wings are clear and extend beyond the abdomen. The legs are reddish with some black coloration on the hind tibia and on the tarsii.

The frequency of occurrence of this robber fly is not known. The individual shown here was photographed at Fontenelle Forest in mid-July.

There are 8 or 9 species in the genus Atomosia in North America. The female lays eggs in rotting wood which provides a source for beetle grubs for the larvae.
