This moss forms lush, dark green cushions on the ground at the base of large trees (D). Its cushions are made up of single plants which form rosettes of long, pointed leaves (B). The stalks and capsules are reddish-brown when mature, with long, pointed calyptra (C).

This moss is considered uncommon in Fontenelle Forest and may be assumed to be uncommon at Neale Woods as well. Large cushions of this species have been seen next to compacted trails on upland slopes, at the base of large trees.
