This beetle is about ¼ inch long. It is reddish- yellow on the elytra with dark markings. Most members of this subfamily have sculpturing on the elytra.

This beetle lives on basswood and oak leaves. The larva mine the leaves feeding between the upper and lower surfaces. Photo B shows some leaves after being eaten by the leaf miner. It should be common at Fontenelle Nature Center due to the large numbers of basswood trees.

This beetle belongs to the subfamily Hispanae of the chrysomelidae family. Unlike other leaf beetles members of this subfamily have small mouth parts and a head that slants backward.
