The Basswood Leafroller has a wingspan of approximately 1.25 inches. The wings are white with yellow, blue and brown shading. The hoIlow orbicular, claviform and reniform spots are outlined in dark brown. The body is slender, the wings are broad and the abdomen is longer than the hindwings. These characteristics are typical of members of this subfamily, Pyraustinae. The larva is green with a black shiny head and prothoracic shield and black thoracic legs. It grows to approximately 1 inch long.
The frequency of occurrence is not known for Fontenelle Forest or Neale Woods. The individual shown here was photographed in early September at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center.
The larval food plant is mainly basswood, but they will also eat oaks. The larva fold leaves or bore in stems and fruits of the food plants.
