A native weedy, bunched annual from 8-48 inches tall with stems that may be erect, leaning or almost flat on the ground. The leaves are flat, long (2-20 inches) and narrow (up to 1/4 inch) with a prominent whitish midrib (F), especially near the base. The flower cluster is an elongated 4-20 inch panicle often partly enclosed in the upper leaf sheath (A). Erect, narrow, spike-like branches bear numerous overlapping spikelets which hug the stem and are lined up along its long axis (D,E).
Weedy plant in parking lots, roadsides, gardens, moist soil in marshes, edges of streams, ponds and ditches. It is locally common at Fontenelle Forest on Camp Gifford Road near the railroad crossing. It has not been identified at Neale Woods. Bearded Sprangletop flowers from July to October, mostly in July and August.
