25 inches long with a 44 inch wing span. The Black-crowned Night-Heron has a short neck and thick black bill. It has a black cap and back. The wings are gray and the underparts are white. There is a white plume of feathers on the hindneck that becomes longer and more obvious during breeding.

 

The Black-crowned Night-Heron is an unusual bird in the Omaha area and is rarely see in Fontenelle Forest.

 

The Black-crowned Night-Heron is most active at night feeding in the same areas that other herons use during the daylight. It often roosts in trees and bushes.
