This insect is about 1/2 inch long (12 mm). It is mostly black, with two red spots on the head cover; the wing covers and head covers are lined in yellow. They are soft bodied and usually have the head hidden under the thoracic shield. Adults have flattened antennae.

They are often found in open woodlands. They can easily be spotted in wet or swampy areas in the spring and early summer. The larvae prefer the moist areas of swamp land and will often live on the ground and under bark.

Unlike many other fireflies, the adults of this species do not luminesce and communicate instead using pheromones.
