BLACK-SIDED PYGMY GRASSHOPPER

This small grasshopper is only about 5/8th of an inch (15 mm) long and can be dark brown as shown, but also variably black, gray, brown, or cream in color. Often dark-sided with wide creamy band on top. Lower face of female is usually dark, that of male is usually a creamy white. Hind femur often has a light spot.

 

This grasshopper is common in our area but is not often seen because of its small size. The images shown here were taken in late June and September in Fontenelle Forest. This species has one generation per year and apparently is sometimes found in migratory swarms in a variety of habitats.
