BLACK-SPOTTED LADY BEETLE

Members of this genus are orange with black spots or stripes. They are about 1/5th of an inch long. This Lady Beetle was identified with the help of BugGuide volunteer expert Tim Moyer, who advised not to name it below genus level.

 

Its occurrence at the Fontenelle Nature Center is not known.

 

Adults and larvae feed on aphids and eggs and larvae of other insects. There are 18 species of this genus in N. America. Some individuals lack spots. All lady beetles lack spots when freshly emerged from the pupa.
