SCENTLESS PLANT BUG FAMILY (Rhopalidae)

This Bug is included in this grouping because it looks similar to the Milkweed Bugs. The adults, are black with a red stripe partially down their back and along the wing’s edges. They grow to about 1/2 inch long (12 mm). Image B shows the nymph with underdeveloped wings.

These bugs should be common in both of our nature centers. They are most often seen in and around buildings where the females like to overwinter in large numbers. In the spring the females lay their eggs under the bark of Box Elder and other trees. The larvae have up to 5 molts before they turn into mature bugs.
