This beetle is about ½ inch long. It is dark brown with white markings. White markings on the elytra touch or nearly touch the midpoint of the elytra. Its identity was confirmed by Steve Spomer an entomologist at UNL.
This specimen was found on Marsh trail along the great Marsh. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known but it is considered very common in Nebraska. It is usually seen in spring and summer and it lives in sand, gravel, or clay soil.
Also known as the common shore tiger beetle. This species has a two year life cycle. Its food is many insects and some fruit.
