This caterpillar is included under the slightly hairy ones here, because of the sparsely paired hairs running along its back. It was identified with the help of expert volunteers at BugGuide. It had not been documented in Nebraska before, according to one expert, although it is assumed to occur east of the Rockies, again, according to BugGuide. It feeds on asters and goldenrod, which are common in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods, our two private nature centers. The adult is a moth, which has a wing span of about 2 inches and light brown wings with darker brown streaks.
Considered rare in Fontenelle Forest, since it had not been documented in Nebraska before (BugGuide).
The larval foodplants are ampelopsis, grape and Virginia creeper. When disturbed, the larvae vomit an orange fluid.
