This native annual aquatic plant grows up to 1 foot tall, with heart-shaped leaves on long stalks, usually erect, sometimes floating on water. The flowers have three white petals (B,C); they are arranged in whorls of 3-6 on triangular stalks above the leaves. The fruit is a spiny spherical head, first green (B) then brown (D).

Found in or near water on the floodplain at Fontenelle Forest.  One year it was common in the pond south of Gifford Road, but this annual plant may be rare or absent in other years. It blooms in June and July.
