This mushroom is 4-10 inches high and 2-10 inches wide. It is pear shaped with a broad often pear shaped top. It is white to grayish and occasionally yellow brown. It has a prominent stem like base. The base persists through the winter long after the rest of the mushroom disintegrates.

It is found solitary or in groups. It is widely distributed in pastures, open woods or open areas from late fall to spring. Its occurrence in Fontenelle Forest seems to vary every year.

It is the second largest of the puffballs. It is recognized by its flattened top and large base
