This grasshopper was identified with the help of an expert volunteer at BugGuide (David J. Ferguson). The notch at the top of the pronotum apparently is diagnostic for this species. Most of the grasshoppers are difficult to identify to species from photographs alone. These large grasshoppers, up to 2 inches long, come in different colors and make a lot of noise when flushed as they fly away and glide with their large, black wings with yellow fringes.

Image A was taken on a gravel path through Knull Prairie in Neale Woods. Images B and C were taken the end of August in Fontenelle Forest. This grasshopper is common in this area.
