Dance Flies
Dance Flies are common worldwide but they are not well studied. There are thought to be more than 3,000 species in 30 genera worldwide, about 760 species in North America. Most are predatory, mostly on other flies. They are commonly seen in mating swarms where the males move up and down in a sort of dance to attract females. In some species males offer a food gift to attract females. Hybotid dance flies (formerly included in Empididae) are currently in the family Hybotidae in the superfamily Empidoidea.
