Thread-waisted Wasps

The present Sphecidae family is comprised of the Thread-waisted Wasps. (Several genera and 2 subfamilies were split from the Sphecidae family in 1999 and moved to family status in Crabronidae). As the name implies, the abdomen is long and stalked. The large majority of Thread-waisted Wasps are solitary nesters. The larvae feed on paralyzed spiders, grasshoppers, crickets, caterpillars or wood roaches (depending on the wasp species) provided by the adult female wasp. There are 206 species in North America.
