CHALCID WASP FAMILY (Eulophidae)

A small yellow wasp with multiple black stripes on the thorax and head. The abdomen is yellow with black bands. The antennae are short and enlarged distally. Legs are yellow.

The individual shown here was photographed in June 2016 in Fontenelle Forest, attracted to moth lights. The distribution of this wasp is unknown. However, the specimens represented on BugGuide are shown as far east as Rhode Island and as far west as Nebraska.

There are four subfamilies in the family Eulophidae with more than 830 species in 110 genera in North America. They are known to feed on mites, spider egg cases, a few bugs, thrips, numerous families of beetles, moths, flies and wasps.
