This species has a wingspan of approximately 1 3/4 inches. It is predominately white dorsally with a few charcoal gray markings on the male. The female has several charcoal gray marks that form a checkered pattern. The veins on the hind wings ventrally are marked with yellow-olive. The antennae are checkered black and white. The mature larva is about 1 1/2 inches long. It is downy with black speckles and alternating blue-gray and yellow longitudinal stripes.

This is an uncommon butterfly in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. It is more common in some years than others. They can be found nectaring on flowers.

Spring individuals tend to be more heavily marked with gray. Some summer males can be almost completely white except for a black cell spot above and tan lines below on the veins. The larval foodplants are many kinds of mustards.
