CHESTNUT BARK BORER

LONG-HORNED BEETLES (Cerambycidae)

This beetle is black with golden yellow bands. It is around 10-15mm in length (2/5-3/5 inch). The face of this beetle slants forward or nearly vertical. It has very long antenna as do all members of this family.

 

This beetle is found in living or dead hardwood trees. Its overall occurrence at Fontenelle Forest is not known. It has a flower feeding habit.

 

This beetle belongs to the flower longhorn subfamily (Lepturinae). Members of this group are known for their bell shape (narrow in front, broad at the base). Wounds made by this beetle allowed spores of chestnut blight disease to enter chestnut trees.
