The Clouded Sulphur has a wingspan of 1 3/8 to 2 inches. Dorsally, the male is light yellow with all black borders. The female is yellow with a yellow spotted black border. Ventrally, both sexes are greenish yellow in spring and fall and clear yellow in midsummer. They are very similar to the Orange Sulphur, but lack any orange coloration. The albino females have pink fringes and are almost identical to albino Orange Sulphur females.

This sulphur is not as common as the Orange Sulphur in our area. It is seen most often in late summer and fall nectaring on flowers.

The caterpillar is bright green with a darker back stripe and light side stripes. It feeds on clover, alfalfa, vetches and other legumes. The chrysalis overwinters.
