COCKLEBUR WEEVIL

Rhodobaenus quinquepunctatus
WEEVIL FAMILY (Curculionidae)

Adults are red with oval black marks on the top of the thorax and on the elytra. Most of these are under ½ inch in length. The snout is well developed, broad and flat. At the tip of the snout are chewing mouthparts. Like many weevils this one has elbow shaped antennae. Larvae resemble plump maggots.

 

Found over the eastern U.S. but its occurrence in Fontenelle Forest is unknown.

 

Larvae are known to bore in the stems or roots of cocklebur, ragweed and other members of the composite family. Belongs to the subfamily Dryopthorinae which have football shaped bodies.
