This fly, commonly called the Stink Fly, is about .75 inch (20 mm) long. This small headed fly has black eyes, a large reddish-brown humped thorax and a large cream-colored abdomen. The legs are red and tan, and the wings are tan colored.

The frequency of occurrence in Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods is not known. The adults are rarely seen. The fly shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in early May. The larvae are probably common under the bark of recently fallen trees.

The larvae prey on the larvae of other insects. This is the only species in the genus Coenomyia.
