Common Roadside Skipper

Amblyscirtes vialis
SKIPPER FAMILY (Hesperiidae)

This small, dark skipper has wingspan of 7/8 – 1 inch. The wings are dark brown except for a white triangle on the hindwing near the tip. The ventral side of the hindwing is lightly frosted blue & gray near the margin. The fringes of the wings are checkered white and brown. The caterpillar is light green with green dots and soft hair. The head is frosty with rust-colored stripes.

 

These skippers are fairly common in small numbers in summer. They can be seen nectaring on flowers or along the roads and trails. They are fast flying and usually stay close to the ground.

 

The host plants are various grasses including Kentucky blue grass, striped oats and Bermuda grass.
