This fly is approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm) in length. The thorax and abdomen are metallic green and have long, wispy black hairs. The eyes are green. The wings are a clear gray color. The legs are very long and gray. This fly was identified to the genus Condylostylus by volunteer experts at the BugGuide website.
The fly is known to be present in June and is found on vegetation where it searches for small insect prey..
The are 40 species in the genus Condylostylus in North America. Many are very similar and difficult to identify from photographs. Males display their legs to females during courtship. Adults and larvae are predacious on small insects. The larvae develop in wet to dry soil and pupate in cocoons made up of soil particles cemented together.
