This moth has a wingspan of 1.25 to 1.75 inches. Adults are variable in color. The forewing is usually yellowish-brown or tan often with a small dark central spot. The hindwing is a cream color with a wide brownish marginal band. The caterpillar is also variable in color and can be pale tan to orange, green or dark brown.

 

This is a common moth that is seen most often in August and September. It can be seen nectaring on flowers during the day. Adults immigrate northward from the south each year. The species cannot tolerate the northern winters.

 

Formerly called Heliothis zea. This is a Flower Moth, in the sub-family Heliothinae. The adult nectars on a variety of flowers including alfalfa, clovers, milkweed, Joe-Pye Weed and others. The larva, also known as Tomato Fruitworm, bores into food plant tissue. It feeds on corn, soybeans, and many garden vegetables and flowers. The larva can be a pest to agricultural crops and gardens.
