CREAM-BORDERED DICHOMERIS

The Cream-bordered Dichomeris has a wingspan of about .75 inch. The forewing is black with a broad, creamy costal stripe that has a spur that extends into the postmedian area. The hindwing is gray. It has upward pointing labial palps that curve over the head like tiny horns. The caterpillar is cream-colored with light brown striping the length of the body. The head is shiny black. The caterpillar grows to approximately .75 inch.

 

The frequency of occurrence in this area is not known. This moth was photographed at Fontenelle Forest in mid-June 2016 coming to lights. It occurs from Quebec and Maine to Florida, west to Texas, north to Manitoba. Adults fly in June and July.

 

The larvae are leaftiers on aster, goldenrod and sunflower plants.
