This aquatic, introduced from Europe, floats on or below the water level and grows to 2 feet long, but usually shorter (B). Its slender leaves, up to 3 inches long, are alternate on their stems and have distinctly wavy margins (A). The brownish flowers are crowded on vertical spikes which stick up out of the water by about 2 inches when flowering (C).
Grows in shallow water of streams and ponds, flowering in May and June. In Fontenelle Forest, locally common in water along Stream Trail. Occurrence seems to vary from year to year.
