The Darker Moodna Moth has a wingspan of .50 to .75 inch. The upper forewing is maroon with a wide black median band broadly edged with white. The reniform spot is surrounded with white. The hindwing is pale tan.

 

The frequency of occurrence of the Darker Moodna Moth in this area is not known. It was photographed on July 28, 2016 in Fontenelle Forest coming to lights. It occurs in most of eastern North America and eastern Canada from Quebec and Maine to Florida west to Texas and Nebraska.

 

Reported food plants are trees and low plants including peach, apple, pear, iris, oak, sumac and others. The larva is a scavenger of dried seeds, mummified fruits, rose galls, dried rose buds and acorns.
