The caterpillars of the Datana genus are difficult to identify by their images alone. Even the expert volunteers of BugGuide were unable to do that from this image. Datana caterpillars are about 1 1/2 inches long and they usually feed in groups, which can defoliate parts of their host trees. When disturbed, they typically strike a bizarre pose, with both ends of their bodies raised as shown in our image here. The adult moths belong to the Prominent family. They typically have light brown wings, crossed by curved lines.

The abundance of this genus of moths is not yet known for our two nature centers.

All parts of this plant may produce a severe contact allergy. Leaflets of three – let it be!!!
