This large grass skipper has a wingspan of 1 1/4 – 1 5/8 inches. Ventrally, the forewings and hindwings of the male and female are plain orange-brown with 2 pale rays on the hindwing that extend out from the base to the margin. Dorsally, the male is orange with broad dark brown borders, a black stigma and an orange ray on the hindwing. Dorsally, the female is brown with pale orange spots on the forewing. The antennae are dark brown with brown tips. The caterpillar is bluish-green with a dark green dorsal stripe. The body is covered with small, white lateral dashes. The head is white with orange-brown lines and a black oval spot.
This uncommon species has been seen in early July in Fontenelle Forest around the garden by the Wetlands Center.
Formerly called Sedge Skipper. This species inhabits marshy areas. The adults are most likely to be found on flowers near marshes and are especially attracted to milkweeds.
