This Sawfly is approximately .50 inch in length. It has black eyes and a black thorax. The abdomen is orange except for the last 3 segments which are black. The legs are orange and black. The antennae are black. This Dolerus Sawfly was identified by volunteer experts on the BugGuide website.
The frequency of occurrence of this Sawfly is not known. The individual shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in early May.
This Sawfly is in the subfamily Dolerinae which has 41 species and two genera in North America. The larvae are green and slender and most feed on foliage, but a few are leaf miners or stem borers.
