This small fly is approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm) in length. Long-legged Flies can be many colors from green to red to black.  Many have a metallic sheen.  Most have sparse, black bristles on the thorax. The wings have dark veins, and are long and swept back.  Some can have dark spots or stripes on the wings.

 

These flies are present in summer and can be found on vegetation where they search for prey.

 

There are over 1,200 species in this family in North America. Adults and larvae are predators, especially on mites, aphids and smaller flies.
