The Dusky Groundling has a wingspan of approximately 1.50 inches. The forewing is mottled dark brown and black. The claviform spot is black. The lower half of the reniform spot is white. The hindwing is grayish-brown with light fringes. The larva is green with a thin white middorsal stripe edged with maroon. The body is covered with minute white spots. The head is green with broad black stripes that converge rearward. When mature it is about 1.5 inches long.

 

The frequency of occurrence is not known. It has been photographed once at Neale Woods in September 2012 coming to artificial lights and in Fontenelle Forest in late August 2013.

 

The larvae eat the leaves of joe pye weed (Eupatorium purpureum), white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) and dogfennel (E. capillifolium). This moth was formerly called Platysenta vecors.
