As the common name implies, this Goldenrod has leaves shape similar to those of some elms. As with some of the other Goldenrods, the leaves vary in shape as they appear along the stem. The basal leaves are elliptic with teeth as shown in some of the images (B,C). Further up the stem they become smaller and with fewer teeth. The stem is smooth and hairless. The yellow flowers are arranged in pointed panicles, with flowers facing one side (secund) as shown.
This species of goldenrod is rare in Fontenelle Forest. Only one group of plants has been found so far in an open area on Prairie Trail. It had not been documented in Sarpy County before (2009), and was identified with the help of Professors Sutherland and Kaul of the University of Nebraska.
