This Crane Fly is approximately 3/4 inch (20 mm) in length. The head, thorax and abdomen are a tan color. The wings are distinctively colored with large patches of brown blocks interspersed with smaller white irregular patches. The legs are long and tan with black bands at the “knees.” This species was identified by volunteer experts with the BugGuide Website.
Crane flies are usually found in cool, shady places in woodlands. The frequency of occurence of this species is not currently known. The only one recorded was seen in late May in Fontenelle Forest.
This Crane Fly was formerly placed in the sub-family Limoniinae in the Tipulidae family. The antennae has 14 or 16 segments whereas Tipulidae has 13 segments. The genus Epiphragma is small with only 4 species in North America with all species having distinctively patterned wings.
