This flower fly larva is approximately 1/2 inch (13 mm) in length. It has a slug-like appearance and is translucent with white to cream-colored lace-like designs. There is a lengthwise white dividing line down the middle of the body. To see an adult of this species chick here.
The frequency of occurrence is unknown, but the individual shown here was photographed in Fontenelle Forest in late July. It can be found on plants infested with aphids.
The larvae are predators of aphids and other related species. The adults feed on nectar, pollen and the honeydew produced by aphids.
